The magnificent Savoy Theatre has been hosting hits since 1881. They’re known for top notch drama, opera and musicals and today the building is Grade 2 listed. The venue was designed by C. J. Phipps and was the first to use electric light instead of gas lamps, a major innovation at the time. Gilbert and Sullivan ruled the roost for several years early in the theatre’s lifetime and it has also hosted many critically acclaimed plays, from Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit to The Man Who Came To Dinner. Renovated in the 1990s after a fire, it has been home to plays by Stoppard, Priestley and Shakespeare plus concerts by well-loved bans including the Pet Shop Boys. Today the Savoy is part of the Ambassador Theatre Group and retains its focus on musicals, with Legally Blonde in 2009, the Tina Turner musical Soul Sister, Cabaret and Let It Be, the Beatles musical.
